How deep to mulch, how many cubic yards or bags you need, and when a truckload makes sense.
Mulch is ordered by area and depth. Beds often use 2–3 inches; deeper piles look fuller but cost more and can smother plants if overdone.
Example: 20×30 ft at 3 in
Raw ≈ 5.6 yd³. With a 10% buffer ≈ 6.1 yd³. At ~0.4 t/yd³ that is only ~2.4 tons — light material, so volume (or bags) usually drives the order more than weight.
Small beds may be cheaper in bags; larger yards usually win with bulk delivery. Compare both in the calculator.
