Topsoil for lawn & beds

How much topsoil for a lawn or garden bed: depth guidelines, yards, tons, bags, and truckloads.

Topsoil depth depends on the job: a thin dressing over existing soil is different from building a new bed. Many lawn renovations use roughly 2–4 inches; garden beds may want more.

Example: 20×30 ft at 4 in

Raw ≈ 7.4 yd³. With a 12% buffer ≈ 8.3 yd³ (~9.1 tons at 1.1 t/yd³) — often under one tandem if volume-limited.

Use fill dirt for building pad grade, then topsoil for the finish layer — do not mix the two jobs in one order without checking with your supplier.

FAQ

Topsoil vs fill dirt?

Fill dirt builds structure and grade. Topsoil is the growing/finish layer. Order the material that matches the layer you are placing.

Bags or bulk?

Small beds can use bags; lawns and large beds usually go bulk. Compare bag count and loads in the calculator.
